An animal rescue organization that helps feed at least 100 animals every week in Pontiac is in need of donations of cat and dog food.

Animal Care Network, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, requires animals to be spayed or neutered in order to be eligible for food assistance. The success of the nonprofit’s spaying and neutering program has translated into an increased need for pet food.

“These are people that — whether they have lost their jobs, lost their income, (are on) disability (or) have medical reasons — they need the help,” said Pam Porteous, who’s volunteered with Animal Care Network since its inception.

“They love their pets. They just need some help with the food.”

The group has rescued 15,927 animals in Pontiac since its founding in 1994 and performed 113,843 visits, assistance calls and wellness checks. Animal Care Network has delivered 4,000 bales of straw to keep pets warm during the winter and had 21,991 dogs and cats vaccinated.

“Our donations have just been really down,” Porteous said. “We haven’t had a lot of dog and cat food donated in the last couple of months. We’re also going through more now.”
